XVII BRAZIL OPEN CUP QUBICA AMF 2008 (3)

Zoghaib and Rodrigues to represent Brazil in 2008 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup – Tiger Bowling Center Lanes in Sao Paulo, Brazil (August 14-17, 2008)

Renan Zoghaib and Roberta Rodrigues won the 17th Brazil Open Cup QubicaAMF 2008 at Tiger Bowling Center Lanes in Sao Paulo, Brazil and will represent Brazil in the 44th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup from November 7-15, 2008 in Hermosillo, Mexico. The Brazilian World Cup qualifier was organized by Pin1 Bowling Supply.

Zoghaib (pictured left) and Rodrigues led the men’s and women’s division after 18 games with 208.28 and 200.06 average, respectively, en route to earn the No. 1 seed for the five-player stepladder finals; a huge advantage as the No. 1 seed must be defeated twice to win the title.

Raoni Dipoldi defeated Marcelo Suartz, Brazil’s representative in last year’s BWC in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Fernando Bueno in the opening shoot-out match, 229-187-160.

No. 2 seed Charles Robini, son of Roseli Santos, Brazil’s female bowler in St. Petersburg, stopped Dipoli in the semifinal, 182-151, to earn the right to bowl Renan Zoghaib for the title. Robini carried the momentum into the title match and defeated the No. 1 seed in the first game, 227-212, to force a decisive game.

Zoghaib rebounded with a 205-198 win in the decider to win the 17th Brazil Open and to secure the ticket to Hermosillo.

In the opening match in the women’s division, Marina Suartz, Marcelo mother, easily defeated Katia Abrao and Maria Santos, 171-147-123. Second-seeded Roseli Santos flew past Suartz in the semifinal, 233-149, to meet Roberta Rodrigues (pictured right) in the title match.

Santos, who represented her country in the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, was one win away from her second consecutive BWC participation after defeating Rodrigues in the first game of final, 214-182. However, Rodrigues had other plans and came back with a 213-210 win in the decisive game to seal the victory.
